Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy on Not Producing ‘Parasomnia’

In a new interview, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy explained why he wasn’t involved in producing the band’s latest album, Parasomnia, after co-producing the previous six Dream Theater albums he played on.

Portnoy revealed that John Petrucci wanted to maintain the sole producer credit, a role he took on after Portnoy’s departure in 2010. While Portnoy would have liked to resume their previous co-production arrangement, he respected Petrucci’s decision, acknowledging that the band had evolved during his absence.

Despite this, Portnoy emphasized that all his creative input was welcomed, particularly on conceptual and thematic elements. He also noted that not being tied to full-time production duties allowed him more time with his family.

Parasomnia, released February 7, 2025, is Dream Theater’s first album with Portnoy since 2009. It was produced by Petrucci, engineered by James “Jimmy T” Meslin, and mixed by Andy Sneap.

Dream Theater is currently on their 40th-anniversary North American tour, marking Portnoy’s return to the lineup. The tour, which began on February 7 in Philadelphia, will conclude on March 22 in New York City.
