Steven Wilson Unveils New Album ‘The Overview’: Release Date, Tracklist, and Tour Details

Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson is set to release his highly anticipated solo album The Overview on March 14 via Fiction Records. Marking his eighth studio album, the record features two multi-part compositions—‘Objects Outlive Us’ (23 minutes 17 seconds) and ‘The Overview’ (18 minutes 27 seconds).

Exploring the ‘Overview Effect’

The album draws inspiration from the “overview effect”—a phenomenon experienced by astronauts who, upon viewing Earth from space, undergo a profound cognitive shift that changes their perception of humanity and the planet.

Wilson explained:

“It is a 42-minute long journey based on the reported ‘overview effect,’ presenting images and stories of life on Earth—both good and bad.”

While the project began as a solo effort, it evolved to include contributions from longtime collaborators:

  • Craig Blundell – drums
  • Adam Holzman – keyboards
  • Randy McStine – guitars

The album promises a “resolutely singular sound” with nods to Wilson’s past works, including The Raven That Refused To Sing, The Future Bites, and 2023’s The Harmony Codex.

Exclusive Film Premiere

The Overview will be accompanied by a full-length visual film directed by Miles Skarin. Both the album and film will debut at London’s BFI IMAX on February 25, featuring a Q&A session with Wilson.

2025 UK & European Tour

Steven Wilson’s 2025 headline tour—his first in seven years—kicks off in Europe on May 1, with the UK leg starting on May 10. Key dates include:

  • May 10 – Beacon, Bristol
  • May 12-13 – London Palladium (two nights)
  • May 15 – Newcastle O2 City Hall
  • May 17 – Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
  • May 19 – Salford Lowry

Past and Present

Wilson’s previous release, The Harmony Codex (2023), arrived after his reunion tour with Porcupine Tree, which followed their decade-long hiatus. Reflecting on the experience, Wilson told NME:

“It was fun and joyous to get back with the guys without the pressure of feeling like it was my day job.”

Coldplay Controversy Clarified

Wilson also addressed a long-standing rumor involving Coldplay. At a 2006 Porcupine Tree show, he was photographed holding a sign that read, “Coldplay are wankers.” In a recent statement, Wilson clarified that the sign was handed to him by a fan, saying:

“I was nonplussed and held up the sign to ask the author why they had written such an incorrect and inappropriate statement.”

With The Overview, Wilson continues to push the boundaries of progressive music while remaining true to his creative vision. Fans can look forward to an immersive new chapter in his storied career.
