As Jennie gears up for a monumental 2025, she finds herself at the intersection of her long-awaited solo debut and Blackpink’s highly anticipated reunion. With her solo record under her own independent label OddAtelier (OA) and Blackpink set to return with new music and a world tour, Jennie is embracing her independence and creative control while navigating the demands of global fame.
The Journey to Her Solo Album
Jennie’s solo debut has been years in the making. Though she released solo singles “Solo” (2018) and “You & Me” (2023), she long dreamed of a full album to express her artistry. She began her “album journey” in early 2024 in Los Angeles, collaborating with producers like El Guincho and Billy Walsh to craft a sound that reflects her multifaceted identity.
Her first single, “Mantra”, was released in October 2024, showcasing her signature blend of sharp rap, sultry vocals, and fierce stage presence. The song hit No. 2 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. and No. 3 on the Billboard Global 200 charts, marking a bold start to her solo career.
Finding Her Sound and Independence
Creating the album was a challenging but rewarding process for Jennie. “It was rough at the start—walking into rooms with new people, figuring out what fits,” she admits. Eventually, she found a creative team that matched her vision. She describes her debut record as deeply personal, with songs spanning different genres. “I wanted every song to feel like me. I didn’t want anything forced,” she says.
Her experience of working independently compared to her time with Blackpink has been eye-opening. “The scariest part is realizing you’re fully in control,” she confesses. “But I needed this to grow and understand who I am as an artist.”
Launching OddAtelier
Jennie took a major step toward creative autonomy by launching her label, OddAtelier, in 2023. Named after the French word for a creative workshop, OA represents Jennie’s ambition to build something bigger than herself. “I didn’t start this label just for me—it’s a space for creativity and collaboration,” she explains.
Though she has no immediate plans to sign other artists, Jennie remains focused on mastering her craft. “People ask me if I’ll sign anyone, and I’m like, ‘Can I finish my album first?’” she laughs.
Balancing Global Stardom
Despite her busy schedule, Jennie values moments of stillness and reflection. Her ideal day off includes Pilates, organizing her home, and dinner with friends. She’s also learned to embrace her vulnerabilities: “I’ve had times when I didn’t know who I was or what I was living for. But I’ve grown from that phase, and now I’m proud of how committed I am to myself.”
Jennie draws strength from her mother, whom she calls her “No. 1 boss lady.” Her childhood experiences, including living in New Zealand and creating an alter ego named Ruby-Jane, shaped her love of independence and storytelling.
The Blackpink Reunion
As Jennie’s solo era unfolds, she remains deeply connected to Blackpink. The group’s reunion in 2025 will feature new music, a world tour, and individual projects from members Lisa, Rosé, and Jisoo. “I’ve missed the girls. I’ve missed our silly moments,” Jennie shares. “We’ve all grown so much, and I think this will be the most powerful version of us anyone has ever seen.”
For Jennie, this balance between group and solo work reflects her evolving identity. “I want to live in the present,” she says. “This is my life—and I’ve learned that while it’s amazing to chase your dreams, it’s just as important to live.”
