Dave Gahan Reflects on Depeche Mode’s Future Following Mark Lanegan Tribute

Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan recently shared insights on the band’s future and his creative process after participating in a tribute concert for late grunge icon Mark Lanegan. The event took place last night (December 5) at London’s Roundhouse, commemorating what would have been Lanegan’s 60th birthday and celebrating his legacy.

  • Honoring Lanegan: Gahan, who toured and collaborated with Lanegan on projects with Soulsavers and Humanist, expressed deep admiration for the former Screaming Trees singer. Lanegan passed away in February 2022 at age 57. The tribute featured performances from Josh Homme, Chrissie Hynde, Bobby Gillespie, Alison Mosshart, and others honoring his extensive musical impact.
  • Depeche Mode’s Post-Tour Pause: Reflecting on Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori tour, Gahan noted that the experience exceeded his and Martin Gore’s expectations. Since returning home, Gahan has focused on personal time and light songwriting. “It was a fantastic tour… more than what Martin and I could have imagined,” he said.
  • Casual Creativity: While Gahan has resumed songwriting, he admitted he’s not rushing into a new project, instead working casually and drawing inspiration from his daughter’s burgeoning music career.
  • Future of Depeche Mode: While there are no immediate plans for new material, Gahan confirmed that he recently spent time with bandmate Martin Gore and remains open to future collaborations. “I wouldn’t rule out getting together at some point, but it’s not on the cards right now,” he shared.

The Mark Lanegan tribute showcased Lanegan’s influence and legacy while highlighting the camaraderie between artists who shared his creative journey.
