Courtney Love shared her thoughts on the scrutiny Taylor Swift faces over her lyrics in a recent interview with The Standard. Drawing from her own experiences with public speculation, Love, 60, questioned why fans obsessively analyze Swift’s music for clues about her relationships.
“Frankly, I don’t understand why people do this with Swift either — who cares if she dates high-profile people?” Love said, adding that it’s normal for musicians to write about heartbreak. “Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan… they all do it!”
While Love admitted she’s not a fan of Swift’s music, she did praise the singer’s lyricism, especially her angrier tracks. However, she criticized overanalyzing Swift’s work, calling it “middlebrow and boring.”
The interview also covered Love’s admiration for Kendrick Lamar, whom she described as “the best hip-hop writer ever.” She speculated that Lamar might have been influenced by legends like Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, and Bob Dylan. “Seriously, he’s a genius,” Love said.
Additionally, Love discussed her upcoming second solo album, featuring collaborations with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and Echo & the Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant. She recently released a cover of Tim Buckley’s “Song to the Siren” with 070 Shake and former Hole bandmate Melissa Auf der Maur, marking their first studio project together in 24 years.
