In a candid Metal Hammer interview, Arch Enemy members Michael Amott and Daniel Erlandsson revisited the pivotal moment in 2014 when the band faced uncertainty after longtime vocalist Angela Gossow decided to step down and transition to managing the band. The announcement prompted a critical meeting where they questioned whether to continue, but the group ultimately decided to push forward, inspired by the strength of the material they had written for what would become War Eternal.
The album marked the debut of Alissa White-Gluz as lead vocalist. Amott admitted they felt immense pressure, given the scrutiny surrounding the lineup change, likening it to past challenges faced by iconic bands like Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. However, he credited White-Gluz’s strong performance and the quality of the record for winning over fans, noting the faster acceptance enabled by social media. Erlandsson reflected on the album as a “do-or-die” moment, with its success setting the tone for Arch Enemy’s future.
War Eternal went on to cement White-Gluz’s place in the band, with Amott humorously recalling how fellow musicians sought advice on how they managed such a seamless transition. Now, Arch Enemy is gearing up for their fourth album with White-Gluz, Blood Dynasty, set for release on March 28, featuring singles like “Dream Stealer” and “Liars & Thieves.”
